LA Tenorio and Membrere proved that Harbour Centre is not just about Mark Cardona as the two sparkled in the fourth quarter in leading the Port Masters to a 79-63 win over Negros Navigation-San Beda, 79-63, in a battle of newcomers in the PBL Unity Cup at the FEU Gym.
Cardona did score a game-high 28 points but it was Tenorio and Membrere who keyed Harbour's bristling attack in the fourth that turned a close contest into a rout - their third straight win in four starts.
It was the fourth straight defeat for the Red Lions in as many outings but unlike in their first three blowout losses, the played with lots of courage and enthusiasm this time.
Their lack of experience, however, told heavily on the Red Lions as they fell into a maze of errors. Their faulty shooting at crunch time also hastened their downfall.
"I'm quite satisfied this time because they (Port Masters) played with lots of confidence. Little by little, this team is showing great composure," said a visibly elated coach Tonichi Yturri. "What made me doubly happy was that they did not make something stupid in the fourth quarter"
Unlike in their 75-73 win over Toyota Otis-Letran last Tuesday, the Port Masters played in business-like manner as exemplified Cardona, Tenorio and Membrere. Cardona highlighted his game-long brilliance with six boards, four steals and three assists in 28 minutes of action. Protecting a slim 58-57 lead, the Port Masters strung up nine straight points in a run highlighted by a triple each from Tenorio and Membrere.
Four more points from Membrere and another booming trey from Tenorio finally settled the outcome of the game, 74-59 with less than two minutes left.
Agile and versatile, the 5-foot-11 Membrere also shone on the defensive end as he silenced Negros new recruit Noy Javier in the final seven minutes that greatly helped Harbour cause.
The cat-quick Javier, one of three faces in Negros line-up, was doing great - scoring treys in succession, rebounding and assisting - until Membrere pestered him with his leech-like guarding.
Harbour 79 - Cardona 28, Membrere 12, Tenorio 11, Espinas 8, Mesina 8, Bugia 5, Mendoza 4, Gatumbato 2, Sanz 1, Dizon 0, Buenafe 0, Castro 0.
Nenaco 63 Javier 21, Angeles 16, Aljamal 9, Hudencial 5, Cruz 4, Fasano 2, Paterno 2, Baldivia 2, Antonio 0, Arbole 0, Razon 0.
Quarterscores: 14-13; 30-30; 50-43; 79-63.
